The Serenity Prayer

... is a prayer written by Confessing Church figure and Union Theological Seminary professor Reinhold Niebuhr in 1926 or 1932, according to records from Alcoholics Anonymous as the ending to a longer prayer. It is used in Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous and other Twelve-step programs.
The version used by Alcoholics Anonymous et al leaves out the overtly religious material and may be more acceptable to Freethinkers.
The short version that most people are familiar with goes as follows:

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
courage to change the things I can,
and the
wisdom to know the difference.

One criticism of this prayer is over what the word 'accept' means. Some argue that while it is impossible to change the fact that crimes such as rape and murder happen, it would be inhumanly callous to accept them. Supporters of the prayer sometimes counter by saying that 'accept' does not mean 'condone', which satisfies some critics but not others.

The Serenity Prayer has often been attributed to others, including St. Francis of Assisi but without sources. Though similar prayers may have existed, the work seems to be Reinhold Niebuhr's. He never copyrighted the prayer and it has been used in many variants.
Alternate versions of the Serenity Prayer exist. Some are parodies and some are serious. The most commonly encountered complete prayer is as follows:

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
The courage to change the things I can,
And the wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time,
Enjoying one moment at a time,
Accepting hardship as the pathway to peace.
Taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it.
Trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His will.
That I may be reasonably happy in this life,
And supremely happy with Him forever in the next.
Amen.

Astrology Transit for Reconciliation

"Self-inquiry" Sun in the 12th House, approx. 3 weeks
WEEKS: At this time you have to get in touch with your own subconscious mind, to find out how it directs your life in ways that you aren’t aware of. Try to see how your actions may run counter to your conscious intentions. We all broadcast two kinds of signals to the outer world. One kind is what we think we are trying to do. The other kind, unconscious signals, tell people what we are really trying to do. If these two sets of signals do not coincide, it is not because you are intentionally trying to deceive, but you may confuse people or even worse, cause them to lose faith in what you are trying to do. This is not a time to be wrapped up in your ego. You must be prepared to acknowledge your faults and your virtues without fear or self-recrimination.

"The need for reconciliation" Chiron Opposition Med. Coeli, year-long ***
MANY MONTHS:
Under this influence you will probably come to scrutinize family matters in more detail. You are likely to become aware that childhood experiences continue to influence your present relationships with parents and other family members. Some event could trigger feelings of helplessness, shame or humiliation that stem from childhood. You should now pay attention to feelings which are buried in your unconscious which nevertheless continue to powerfully influence your present need for emotional security. If problems with one of your parents made you decide to break off all contact at some point, you will now have to confront the deeper causes of this conflict. You may sense the need for reconciliation, recognizing that keeping your distance will not solve the problem. The relationship with our parents reflects the relation between the masculine and feminine parts within our own psyche. We can only create a stable and secure inner basis that will help us to cope with the outside world if we can achieve an inner state of harmony between these influences within us. You will waste a considerable amount of precious physical and mental energy if you are unable to rid yourself of the feelings of guilt and resentment associated with painful past events. You desperately need this energy to cope with present circumstances so that you can live in a way which truly reflects your unique abilities and character. For this reason it is important that you try to rid yourself of such feelings, or at the very least to become more conscious of their existence so that your behavior is less determined by them.

"Some obstacle" Uranus-R Square Sun, over one and 1/2 years long ***
MANY MONTHS: During this time sudden, unexpected events will test your ability to withstand change and to stay on the path you have chosen. Each of us sets forth certain objectives that we must accomplish in order to successfully maintain our sense of being a unique and strong individual. This influence seems to ask the question, "Do you really believe in what you are doing? Can you perform your tasks in the face of upsets and challenges from the outside world and even from psychological forces within yourself?" How well you withstand this challenge will determine how well your life will go during the next several years. On one hand you may suddenly realize that because of circumstances that have developed over the last several years you can no longer do what you want without making a lot of changes. It may be necessary to struggle and break free from circumstances that you encounter in your work or with authorities, such as employers or government agencies. There may even be limiting circumstances in your personal life, such as a bad love relationship or parental domination. At any rate some obstacle is preventing you from doing what you have to do, and you want to rebel against it. On the other hand, you may be doing perfectly well in all of these matters. Your job may be perfectly satisfactory, and your personal life may be fulfilling, a real expression of who you are. But something comes along, some unexpected incident that forces you to reevaluate what you are doing. For example, at work someone may throw you a "curve ball," such as an employer suddenly questioning your effectiveness in work or a similar disruption. You may have to reevaluate your relationships to the various groups you belong to. If you are doing what you should in terms of your life and experience, these disruptive events will only be a test that you will withstand successfully. But if you find the energies of this period destructive beyond your control, you should consider what changes must be made either to minimize these effects or to turn them into positive ones.

Transformation, Mars in the 8th House, approx. half a year long *
MANY MONTHS: Basically your ego drives will create a confrontation with something, which will force a transformation of some kind in your life. For example, you may encounter someone who has a powerful effect upon you and causes you to change. This may happen through a conflict with this person, or he or she may gain influence over you and thereby affect you strongly. In a marriage or love relationship, the two of you may disagree strongly on the management of jointly held resources. It is also quite likely that the two of you will use your joint resources, particularly money, rather foolishly and wastefully. The sum total of all of your experiences at this time will lead to either great or small ways of transforming the ways in which you assert yourself in the world.

The Astrology Transit that Epitomizes my Values

“Pure faith”
Neptune Sextile Jupiter, lasting approx. 2 years **

This influence creates a strong desire for a very special kind of knowledge. You are interested in what the rational mind can tell you, but you also want very much to understand the subtler spiritual truths that give your life dimension and meaning. You may want to learn more about metaphysics and spiritual teachings through studying the occult. Or you may become involved with a religious group that gives you greater insight into the meaning of your life. You may also throw over all human knowledge for the way of pure faith. In any case you will eventually discover that all these paths have precisely the same goal.

On a slightly more mundane level, this influence may stimulate your interest in faraway places that seem completely different from your everyday world. You may want to travel, and this is a good time to do so because your sense of awe about the unknown makes your discoveries through traveling all the more fascinating. This is usually a very optimistic time when you feel that nothing can go wrong, which may be so, but it would be foolish to tempt fate with wild and ill-considered actions. The effects of this influence are not so strong that you can get away with living dangerously. But on the other hand, your optimistic and positive frame of mind can help to ensure that your plans work out as you want them to.

You enjoy the company of friends at this time, and you feel sufficiently secure and magnanimous that you don't need to bother with the silly ego games that people often play with their friends. In fact you are much more inclined to take a back seat to other people's ego games and let them have way. Conflicts with others aren’t worth it to you now. You are very giving and generous during this time, because you genuinely want to help others, and you make it quite evident.
